Our Monitoring Tests
Our measurement tests enable insight and assessment of surface and sub-surface conditions. We provide the following services:
An integral part of a stable slope design is the reduction of any pore water pressures that may be present due to groundwater and / or aquifers. Our team can design, supply and install suitable monitoring systems including open hole standpipes and vibrating wire piezometers individually sealed at discreet horizons. These instruments can be fitted with a range of remote monitoring and alarm features and assistance in interpreting and reporting the data from these instruments is a key part of our services.
Displacement / deformation monitoring
A variety of instruments are available for either in ground movement and load monitoring (the SMART range of instruments) or discreet monitoring of suspect structures using a variety of crack monitors. These instruments can be fitted with a range of remote monitoring and alarm features and assistance in interpreting and reporting the data from these instruments is available from highly experienced staff who have spent many years onsite in operational roles.
We provide a range of instruments that enable insitu stresses to be monitored. These instruments include the 3 dimensional hollow inclusion (HI) cell and a range of 2 dimensional stress cells that may be installed at a range of orientations to monitor the insitu stress field. These instruments can be fitted with a range of remote monitoring and alarm features and assistance in interpreting and reporting the data from these instruments is available from highly experienced staff that have spent many years onsite in operational roles.

Coffey Mining has wide experience in the use of cgeophones and accelerometers in the mining environment to assess ground performance. Of specific use to block cave development, the process of cross hole tomography can assist in ground characterisation and allow preconditioning performance to be assessed. We are able to carry this process out at considerable distance from the area of interest by introducing the sensors and sources through boreholes drilled from development nearer the surface. This can be in boreholes of up to 400m deep.
Subsidence measurement can provide critical information in the development of the goaf behind a longwall or the propagation of a cave towards the surface in a block or sub-level cave. Coffey Mining can provide borehole measurement of these parameters to a depth of 500m in grouted or ungrouted boreholes.
Stability of slopes may be assessed using surface monitoring instruments such as prisms or by monitoring crack, fault and structure movements. Coffey Mining can assist with planning a suitable prism network over a slope and also provide assistance in monitoring and interpreting the data. Assessing the selected ground support performance in the mining environment can supply engineers with valuable data to allow support optimisation. The safety of the mine is increased while the ground support is not over engineered. SMART Cables allow the measurement of the actual ground support load while SMART Extensometers ensure that the support has been installed to the correct depth.
