Hollow Inclusion (H.I.) Cells

Hollow Inclusion (H.I.) Cells are used for the measurement of the absolute 3D stress condition in rock by overcoring, and for the measurement of stress change with time. A biaxial pressure test of a recovered overcore containing a H.I. cell also provides values of elastic modulus and Poisson’s ratio, and estimates of any anisotropy and of the stress/strain condition of the test material.

Specifications:

  • thin wall type with 12 x 10mm long strain gauges, thermistor temperature sensor for overcoring,
  • thin wall type with 11 x 10mm long strain gauges, 120 ohm resistor, thermistor temperature sensor for stress change monitoring,
  • 16 x core PVC covered cable with woven wire shield for increased tensile strength,
  • specially formulated epoxy glue for a range of rock temperature; 5C - 50C,
  • a range of accessories including light weight installation equipment, manual switch strain gauge readout, data logger system to take readings during overcoring and from stress monitoring cells, biaxial pressure test cell and pressurisation equipment.
